Who is Jesus Christ?

The most important decision we will make in this life is where we'll spend eternity. When we have made that decision, we're not only prepared to die... we're actually ready to finally live!

God has a personal plan for each of us. His purpose in our lives can only be accomplished because of, and through Jesus Christ. So, who is Jesus Christ?

When this question is personalized, it becomes the most important question you will ever be asked to answer, and the answer is an eternal decision. Who is Jesus Christ to YOU? Why is your answer to this question so important? We live in a day where there seems to be no moral absolutes, and every religion says they have a path to heaven. And so, the popular spiritual philosophy is that all religious belief systems, as long as you follow them sincerely, are equal. Pick one and follow it, and you'll get to Heaven. That's what the world believes, but Jesus teaches otherwise. In the Gospel of John, Jesus speaking to His disciples said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." John 14:6

Jesus is the only way for us to receive eternal life in fellowship with God. There are not many "paths" to heaven, there is only one way. In 1 John 5:11-13 the apostle writes, "And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God." We are told that if we have the Son in our life we can KNOW that we have eternal life.

The life of Jesus Christ is the turning point of all history. Our calendar is centered on His birth. Who was this man from the small town of Nazareth in Israel? Hundreds of years before His birth, prophets announced His coming. Many great men have appeared in this world, yet none were divine and announced beforehand, except this one man... Jesus. There are 109 specific Old Testament prophecies which were fulfilled by the life of Jesus, proving Him to be the Christ... the Messiah.

Jesus Christ taught that every person will exist for eternity. The apostle Paul wrote to the Roman Christians: "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" Romans 3:23 and in Romans 6:23"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." We all know in our hearts that we have sinned. Even if we have never read a Bible or do not understand what it means to sin against God we can know we are sinners, because God created each of us with a conscience. The penalty for sin is death. Two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ, the Holy Son of God, became a man. For 33 years He lived without sin. The life of Christ calls for a decision. The Son of God, who has the power to forgive sin and grant everlasting life to all who will believe on Him, was crucified to pay our sin debt. He paid the penalty for sin without committing the crime. The death of Jesus Christ on the cross was the culmination of His earthly ministry. It is the purpose of His life and the reason He was born. John 3:16-17 says, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved." The body of Jesus was taken down from the cross, laid in a borrowed tomb, and left until after the Sabbath. When women came to prepare the body for burial, they found the tomb empty. Jesus had risen from the dead and would appear to many to prove that death had no hold over Him (Mark 16). Jesus then ascended into heaven (Luke 24:50). One day, Jesus is going to return for all of those who have accepted that free gift of Salvation and take us to our heavenly home. "Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also" John 14:1-3. And, one day He will establish His Kingdom to reign for ever and ever (Revelation 22:1-4).

Jesus died on the cross to take the punishment for our sins so that we could be sinless in the eyes of God. If we do not receive the free gift of eternal life by experiencing the forgiveness provided by Jesus, then we will receive the punishment we so justly deserve. Paul taught that being saved from sin's penalty is possible: "if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." Romans 10:9. He is alive! And now He offers forgiveness of sin and the gift of everlasting life to everyone who will ask Him. You can change your life at this very moment. Admit your sin, repent of it before God. Believe in the atonement of Jesus on the cross and receive the gift of eternal life which Jesus died to freely give you. Invite Jesus into your life to live through you and thank him for doing so.

You can receive Christ as your Savior right now, this moment! You don't have to be in a church or special place. You can pray now, wherever you are. God is listening. Tell Him in your own words that you are sorry for your sins and that you want to receive Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord. Ask God to help you change your heart and life. It's your prayer He wants to hear. You can pray the following prayer, but it is not enough just to say the words. You must mean it from your heart: "God, I know I have sinned. I believe Your Son, Jesus Christ, died to take the punishment for my sin. I believe Jesus came back to life from death and has the power to forgive my sin and change my life. Forgive me. Come into my life and change me. I want to live for You and follow Your plan for my life. I believe You have forgiven me, and I thank You for hearing my prayer, in Jesus' name."

God has forgiven you if you prayed this prayer and meant it from your heart. God knew before you were born that you would receive His Son as your Savior. Now you can begin the life He has planned for you! Step by step God will lead you to what He has chosen for you. He will show you the way to live and will teach you each day as you grow spiritually and become the person He planned for you to be.

Asking Jesus Christ into your life is not practicing a religion, it is establishing a relationship with God through the sacrificial work of His Son on the cross. It is a relationship facilitated by the work of the Holy Spirit of Christ in your life. Your relationship depends not on what you can do for yourself (Ephesians 2:8-9), but on what Christ did for you (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). The proof of your salvation will be a changed life, and while redemption is immediate, sanctification is a process of growth that lasts a lifetime. It is the essence of a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Since all important relationships need to grow, you need to spend time with God every day. Start your day with prayer. Let God be the first person to hear your voice each day! And, you can pray anytime, wherever you are. You don't have to speak out loud if you don't want other people to hear you. Just think what you want to say to God. He knows your thoughts (see Psalm 139:1-4).

You also need to choose a regular time each day to get alone with God. Start doing this immediately. Make it a daily habit of your new life! It doesn't really matter when you spend "quiet time" with God every day, just that you do. It is best if you can have a set time, make it the priority in your day. Begin a Bible Study, read and reflect on the Word, asking the Holy Spirit to teach you. A good place to start in Bible Study is the Epistle of 1 John. You should also find a group of likeminded believers to fellowship and worship with, a local church with an active Bible Study group.
